In a powerful address, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif delivered a stern message to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), asserting that civil disobedience and meaningful negotiations cannot coexist.
“Khawaja Asif Emphasize No Progress Without Constructive Steps”
Speaking in the National Assembly, the senior PML-N leader confirmed that while informal discussions had occurred, formal negotiations had yet to begin. He welcomed positive gestures from PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat, calling them “a refreshing breeze” but stressed that talks could not proceed under threats or hostile conditions.
Khawaja Asif Rejecting Conflict and Emphasizing Peace
Khawaja Asif criticized PTI’s confrontational tactics, stating, “You cannot attack, lead a civil disobedience movement, and expect negotiations at the same time.” He urged PTI to focus on resolving real issues like law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Parachinar, where unrest persists.
Khawaja Asif Condemning Violence Without Bias
The Defense Minister condemned selective criticism over casualties during protests, highlighting that Rangers and police personnel were also killed. “Condemnation should not be selective,” he emphasized.
“Political Workers Don’t Complain”
Rejecting complaints about prison conditions, Khawaja Asif asserted that genuine political workers endure hardships without protests. Reflecting on his own imprisonment, he said, “I was kept in terrible conditions but never complained.”
The Importance of Constructive Dialogue
Khawaja Asif called for reducing tensions through respectful dialogue, adding that resolving disputes requires calm, not hostility. He acknowledged the presence of skilled negotiators within PML-N and PPP, stressing the need for responsible communication from all sides.
Rana Sanaullah: System Cannot Function Without Talks
Political Advisor Rana Sanaullah reinforced the call for government-opposition talks, stating that political stability requires democratic problem-solving through dialogue.
He revealed that PTI formed a negotiation committee, but it wasn’t allowed to operate effectively. He commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s willingness to initiate talks with the opposition.
Sanaullah also recalled past offers for peaceful protests at designated locations instead of D-Chowk, emphasizing that these were part of negotiation efforts. He expressed disappointment that mutual condolences for lives lost, regardless of affiliations, were never formally expressed.
This clear and compelling message from Khawaja Asif and Rana Sanaullah underscores the government’s commitment to resolving issues through dialogue — but only under conditions of mutual respect and peaceful conduct.
