Dr. Younus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has set conditions for advancing Bangladesh-India relations and the stay of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India.
In an interview, Dr. Mohammad Younus described Sheikh Hasina’s political statements from India as a “hostile signal” for Bangladesh.
He stated that Sheikh Hasina should remain silent while in India until Bangladesh formally demands her return, to avoid any trouble between the two countries.
Dr. Younus said, “If India wants to keep her, the condition is that she remains silent because her presence and statements from India are causing issues.”
Referring to Sheikh Hasina’s recent statements labeling the ongoing movement against her as terrorist activities, Dr. Younus added, “Her statements from there are creating unease among us.”
He clarified that the Bangladesh government is determined to bring Sheikh Hasina back and put her on trial, and India must also adjust its stance in this regard.
Regarding future relations with India, Dr. Younus remarked, “India needs to abandon the narrative that only Sheikh Hasina’s leadership ensures stability in Bangladesh.”
Additionally, Dr. Younus dismissed India’s concerns about recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh as a “pretext” and emphasized the need for both countries to work together to improve their relations.
Mohammad Younus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has expressed a clear stance in an interview regarding Sheikh Hasina, indicating that Bangladesh’s mood is not favorable. Younus stated that if India wishes to retain Sheikh Hasina until the Bangladesh government formally requests her return, the condition will be that Hasina must remain silent.
Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is currently in India following her removal from office amid political crisis and violent protests. Younus criticized Hasina’s political comments made from India, asserting that they are inappropriate.
In an interview with the news agency PTI, Younus said that Hasina should remain silent until Bangladesh formally requests her extradition from India. He emphasized that this is essential to ensure that relations between the two countries remain stable.
Younus made these remarks in an interview with PTI at his official residence in Dhaka. He stressed that Bangladesh values strong relations with India but suggested that New Delhi should abandon its narrative that views other political parties besides the Awami League as Islamic and that Bangladesh would become like Afghanistan without Sheikh Hasina.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from the office of Prime Minister, Younus was appointed as the head of the interim government. Expressing concerns over Hasina’s statements, Younus said, “No one in India is comfortable with her stance. She continues to make statements from India, causing issues. If she remained silent, we would forget it. But she is speaking from India and issuing directives, which is not appreciated by anyone.”
