Firing Among Relatives of Nawab Akbar Bugti in Karachi, 17 Arrested

Police conducted operations in the Defence Housing Authority and arrested 17 members of the Bugti tribe after a clash among relatives of the same tribe at Nishat Commercial. The incident resulted in the death of Nawab Akbar Bugti’s nephew and four others, with two individuals injured.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South, Asad Raza, stated that the suspects belonged to two rival groups of the Bugti family.

The DIG added that eight individuals were arrested immediately after the incident, with the remaining suspects detained on Friday morning. Among those arrested were two armed individuals.

The DIG mentioned that two injured members of the Bugti family were transferred to Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment, where police guards have been stationed as the investigators are treating them as suspects involved in the clash.

He said that one group was led by Akbar Bugti’s nephew, Fahad Bugti, and the other by the injured Ali Haider Bugti, who is also a close relative of the late Bugti. During the initial investigation, both parties provided different versions of the incident.

Fahad Bugti claimed that he was attacked by Ali Haider and his armed men and retaliated in self-defense, while Ali Haider’s group alleged that they were attacked.

The DIG stated that investigators questioned Ali Haider about his purpose for visiting Fahad Bugti’s residence at Nishat Commercial, where the incident took place.

Asad Raza revealed that CCTV footage obtained by the police shows Fahad Bugti leaving his house with armed men in two luxury vehicles, while Ali Haider, along with his armed relatives, was traveling in a single vehicle and collided with the bumper of Fahad Bugti’s car. Immediately after, heavy firing ensued from both sides.

The DIG mentioned that the bloody clash occurred near the main gate of Fahad’s residence. Initially, bullets were fired from the left side of Ali Haider Bugti’s vehicle, but it appeared that direct shots were not fired at them, raising suspicions about the involvement of a ‘third party’ who might have initiated the firing.

Providing further details, the DIG said that the exchange of gunfire between the two tribal groups of the Bugti family took place near Pizza Max at Nishat Commercial Lane – 10, in the PS Darakhshan area, around 11:25 AM on Thursday.

On the other hand, an initial report of the clash between the two groups in Defence Karachi has been submitted to the authorities. According to the report, the Karachi police acted within 5 minutes of receiving the incident report. A nearby police mobile van also reached the site upon hearing the gunfire, evacuating citizens and closing shop shutters.

The report states that lowering the shutters kept the people inside the shops, including buyers, safe. The exchange of fire lasted between 13 to 15 minutes, with over 200 bullets fired from both sides, involving small and large weapons.

According to the report, the police started a rescue operation, detaining people from the scene, and impounding two Toyota Revo vehicles, one of which had a registration number plate while the other did not. The registration number plate on the vehicle was found to be fake, with a Suzuki pickup vehicle’s number applied on the Revo.
