PTI International Media Coordinator Ahmad Waqas Janjua Remanded to FIA Custody for 2 Days

The District and Sessions Court Islamabad has handed over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) International Media Coordinator Ahmad Waqas Janjua to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a 2-day physical remand in a case under the PECA Act.

Ahmad Waqas Janjua was presented before Judicial Magistrate Shabbir Bhatti’s court. On this occasion, Waqas Janjua’s lawyer Hadi Ali Chattha was present in the courtroom.

FIA Prosecutor Amir Sheikh stated that the case was registered based on Waqas Ahmad Janjua’s statement and that this is the first time physical remand is being sought for him in the current case.

The FIA prosecutor requested physical remand for Waqas Ahmad Janjua, while his lawyer Hadi Ali opposed the remand.

Lawyer Hadi Ali argued that a case for the recovery of Ahmad Waqas Janjua was registered in the Islamabad High Court. He mentioned that they were informed that he had been presented in the Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad and that physical remand had been obtained.

Hadi Ali stated that a case involving a Kalashnikov and explosive materials was filed against Ahmad Waqas Janjua. He was accused of providing information to Rauf Hassan, who was then judicially remanded.

Continuing his arguments, Hadi Ali said that Ahmad Waqas Janjua was kept in illegal detention for 2 days and should not only be judicially remanded but also discharged from the case.

Hadi Ali also mentioned that Ahmad Waqas Janjua had been in state custody for several days and could have been interrogated during that time.

He further argued that Ahmad Waqas Janjua had not been in contact with Rauf Hassan for over a year due to some differences.

FIA Prosecutor Amir Sheikh argued that the current case against Ahmad Waqas Janjua relates to cybercrime and that only Janjua can provide information about the contacts on his mobile phone.

He added that a technical analysis of Ahmad Waqas Janjua’s mobile phone is required and interrogation needs to be conducted.

Prosecutor Amir Sheikh further stated that Rauf Hassan and others were on physical remand for 7 days, so why not Ahmad Waqas Janjua?

The FIA prosecutor requested a 10-day physical remand for Ahmad Waqas Janjua.

The court reserved its decision regarding Ahmad Waqas Janjua’s physical remand.

Later, Judicial Magistrate Shabbir Bhatti announced the reserved decision, remanding Ahmad Waqas Janjua to FIA custody for 2 days.

It is pertinent to mention that the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court had issued notices to the parties regarding Ahmad Waqas Janjua’s post-arrest bail application the previous day.

On the same day, the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court had rejected the request for physical remand in the arms and ammunition recovery case against Ahmad Waqas Janjua and ordered him to be sent to jail on judicial remand.

Earlier, on July 22, the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court had approved a 7-day physical remand for PTI’s media coordinator Ahmad Waqas Janjua.
